PARALI
A Story Of Rice Straw
The story of Parali: Stubble burning leading to air pollution to creating a revolution in textile industry
What is the issue with Parali?
Parali is a rice straw residue which is generated
after harvesting the rice crop. Burning of it causes
Air Pollution in India, making Delhi and
neighbouring cities environment toxic.
Due to industrialisation, farmers are obliged to
produce more crop on the same land twice a year.
So, they found burning agro-waste to be the
fastest and cheapest way to get rid of it.
Resulting, The AQI reaches more than 700 which is
Hazardous. Leaving people, children with major
health issues.
Founder's Message
Hi my name is Aarushi Mittal from India. I am a sustainable textiles designer graduated from The University of the Arts, London.
I am passionate about creating surfaces that conveys the message and serve utility. Nature and my surroundings are my biggest source of inspiration, and it motivates me to work towards environmental change. Through my work and materials used I want the conversation to start on ‘upcycling the residues’, awareness about burning agricultural fields causing global warming and after life of our textiles.
Living in London surrounded by art, galleries has taught that Art speaks much louder than any thing else. It inspires, educated and connect people. Art has a very strong voice building a community of like-minded people
So, instead of just providing solution of sustainable and compostable textiles. I want to make people aware of the reasons of burning rice straw waste, the journey their food on our plate has traveled, how it was grown? How it becomes a home of animals, fishes and birds. The beauty of terrace farming. That the rice was once a small white flower.
